Curious about Assistive Technology? Low tech and high tech alternatives for making accommodations in the inclusive classroom will be explored. Learn how to modify assignments using the principles of Universal Design for Instruction that emphasize using multiple approaches to meet the needs of diverse learners.

 

Using What You Have: Maximizing Features in Microsoft Word to Differentiate Instruction for All of
Your Students

Despite Microsoft Word’s popularity, many users are unaware of specific features built into Word that can help support students with learning disabilities. This session will explore features in Microsoft Word to differentiate instruction for all students by demostrating tools to support reading, writing, studying and testing.

 

One Computer Classroom

Is your classroom only equipped with one or two computers? This session will demonstrate effective ways to integrate the computer into various curricular areas. Some examples include using technology to enhance Writing Workshop, Literature Circles, WebQuests, math instruction and research specific programs and implementation strategies will be explored.

 

Tools to Help Your Struggling Readers

Technology is an excellent tool to motivate struggling readers and increase their comprehension. This workshop will touch on alternatives to paper-based texts, tools for organizing ideas, and study skills tools. Examples include digital books,
scan-read technology and electronic spellers.

 

Instructional Strategies in Math: Tools to Include All Students

Students need to understand math and use it effectively in their personal lives and the workplace. Technology tools can help students master an understanding of mathematical concepts. This workshop will explore low, mid, and high tech options to fit the needs of your students. Some programs for math instruction that may be explored are Excel, MathPad, IntelliMathics, and Equation Editor.

 

Alternatives to Traditional Textbooks: Audiobooks and e-Text

An in-depth look at altenatives to paper-based texts, this workshop will explore the benefits and concerns of using electronic texts. We will share resources such as e-text databases, Bookshare, RFB&D, public domain and additional web resources, and playback devices: (Digital Book Players, talking books and MP3 players including the iPod). We will also explore how to make e-Text and digital books.

 

Let’s Get Digital: Alternatives to Illegible Note-Taking

Would you like to create a more engaging and interactive classroom to support all learning styles? This workshop will demonstrate how to use electronic whiteboards such as the SMARTBoard and the Mimio to promote an active learning environment. We will also explore portable notetakers.

 

Technology Tools to Support the Writing Process

Technology can support writers at all stages of the writing process. The session will teach a variety of programs that promote pre-writing, composing, editing, and sharing final writing assignments. Some topics that will be explored are graphic organizers, concept mapping, talking word processing, word prediction, and portable notetakers.

 

Transitions: Understanding the Law and Options for Students with Disabilities in a College Environment

Attending college is now a real possibility for many students with disabilities, and assistive technology has an important role to play in helping them be successful in college. This session will describe how students can access services in higher education, address the change from a K-12 to college environment, and discuss where Assistive Technology fits in higher education. Samples of software and other assistive technology tools that can serve as accommodations in college will be demonstrated, and key issues in implementation will be discussed.
